Topic: Cultural Appropriation: The Line Between Appreciation and Exploitation

Overview

This research essay will critically examine the concept of cultural appropriation and explore the distinction between cultural appreciation and cultural exploitation. The paper should analyze how cultural exchange occurs in globalized societies and evaluate when borrowing cultural elements becomes harmful, disrespectful, or exploitative. Students are expected to present a balanced, well-researched argument supported by credible academic sources while strictly following MLA formatting guidelines.

Assignment Requirements

1. Word Count:

Minimum of 500 words (excluding the Title Page and Works Cited page).

2. Formatting Style (MLA):

Follow MLA (Modern Language Association) format throughout the document.

Use 12-point Times New Roman font.

Double-space the entire paper.

Maintain 1-inch margins on all sides.

Include a running header with page numbers in the upper right corner.

Structure

The essay must include the following sections:

Title Page 

Introduction Paragraph:

Clearly introduce the concept of cultural appropriation.

Provide background context on cultural exchange and globalization.

Present a strong and focused thesis statement addressing the line between appreciation and exploitation.

Body Paragraphs (Minimum of Three):

Define and differentiate cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

Analyze ethical, social, and economic implications.

Support arguments with credible academic research.

Include proper MLA in-text citations.

Conclusion Paragraph:

Summarize the key arguments.

Reinforce the thesis.

Works Cited Page:

Include all referenced academic sources.

Format entries correctly according to MLA guidelines.

Research Requirements

Use a minimum of 3–5 credible academic sources (scholarly journals, books, or reputable academic websites).

Include accurate MLA in-text citations for all borrowed ideas and quotations.

Paraphrasing is encouraged; avoid excessive direct quotations.

Originality & Plagiarism Policy

The essay must be at least 80% original.

All borrowed material must be properly cited.

The final submission must be free from plagiarism.

Submission Deadline
